Why
do I need more fonts?
Your computer came standard with a handful of fonts. Times New Roman,
Arial, Courier New and a few other rather boring fonts. They are
great for school papers and business documents, but not practical
when you want to design flyers, cards, websites, banners, brochures,
or anything else. Having a library of assorted fonts will instantly
increase your design capability. New fonts can add some spice to
your documents! (BACK

Where
did all of these fonts come from?
A good portion of the fonts featured at FontFace are submitted
by their designers. Besides that, I just dig around the Internet
and look for new fonts. You can visit the links
section to start your hunt on the Internet. Also, you can click
the underneath
any font to go straight to the website of its creator. Don't want
to waste time hunting for the newest and best fonts on the 'net?
Just keep coming back to FontFace to grab each day's Font
of the Day. (BACK

How
can FontFace be a free site?
The expense of maintaining FontFace is outrageous. Two primary measures
have been made to offset those costs.
Banners and other forms
of advertisements are placed throughout the site. Most of these
sponsors only pay when people visit their sites and download or
buy their products.
Direct
donations are accepted through PayPal.
If you have found FontFace to be a good resource, would you consider
supporting my efforts and the maintenance costs with a small donation?

What
are .ZIP .SIT and .HQX files?
A .ZIP file
is like a briefcase that can pack a bunch of different files into
one file for easy downloading. It also allows files to be compressed
to make the download quicker. Inside every .ZIP file from FontFace,
you'll find a font file and usually a text file explaining copyright
data. To unpack the .ZIP file and get to the files inside, you'll
need a program like WinZip.
A .SIT file is a StuffIt file that, works like a .ZIP file. It allows
multiple files to be packed into one convenient download. After
the files are "Stuffed" they are also encoded (.HQX) to
preserve the integrity while in UNIX and PC environments. The font
files are contained within these files and can be accessed by opening
it up with a program like StuffIt
Expander. (BACK

Are
these fonts really free?
The fonts at
FontFace may be freely download, installed and tested. Some font
designers, however, ask for a small payment if you choose to continue
using the font. Here's some basic definitions:
FREEWARE - Download
these fonts and use 'em! Most freeware designers allow you to
use their fonts without restrictions, but check theaccompanying
documentation or creator's website to make sure!
SHAREWARE -
You must pay for these fonts, but you are allowed to freely download
and test it first. Please keep in mind that it is ILLEGAL to use
a shareware font without paying for it. The designers have shared
their font with you - now share some money with them. Some exceptions
are offered by different authors, so be sure to check their regulations.
HYBRID - This
is my own word to describe those fonts that can be freely used
unless it is part of a money-making effort. Basically, the fonts
are freeware except to professionals. As always, read the documentation
or contact the author for more info. (BACK

Can
I use these fonts however I like?
Restrictions
on use vary from font to font. Since every font has been developed
by a different designer, no blanket policy can be made to cover
fonts downloaded here. Please refer to any documentation that may
be included with the font(s) in question. If you need more information,
you should email the creator of the font. When dealing with copyrights
and licenses, it is always better to ask too many questions than
too few. (BACK TO TOP)
Can
I distribute these fonts on my own site?
Since the vast
majority of the fonts available from this site were not created
by Steve Young, FontFace.com, or anyone in association with FontFace.com,
permission can be neither obtained or refused by FontFace.com. For
restrictions and policies, please refer to the individual font creator's
documentation and/or website. Please respect the creator's wishes.
Please note that when
required, permission has been granted, in writing, to Steve Young
and/or FontFace.com to redistribute fonts. (BACK
TO TOP)
How
do I download the font?
Beneath each
font, you'll find three links. All you have to do is click on your
desired download and your browser will be redirected to a file.
Just save that file someplace that you can find it again! Now the
font has been downloaded! Installing it is another story... (BACK
TO TOP)
Do
these fonts work on a Macintosh?
Every font
is available in both MAC and PC formats. Just click the appropriate
link (located under the graphic of the font) to download the font
for your Operating System. (BACK
TO TOP)
What
format should I download?
There are essentially two different formats of each font
available for download.
If you are on a Macintosh
platform, you'll need to download the MAC version. Most often, the
font will be in TrueType format, but will sometimes be Postscript.
The installation process is the same, but the fonts will function
slightly differently.
For those running Windows
(or any other OS that supports PC TrueType) you have two options
available for download. The first is a .ZIP file containing the
font(s) and other documentation. If you choose this option, you'll
need to manually install the fonts at a later time. If you'd prefer,
you can download the Instant Install archive which, when
run, will automatically install the font into any version of Windows
(Windows 95 and newer). Please note that the .ZIP files are quite
small by comparison and will therefore download much more quickly.
Can
I dowload all the fonts at one time?
No. FontFace users already
download several gigabytes of font files every day. Due to the price
and availability of bandwidth, it is only possible to download individual
fonts. (BACK TO TOP)
What
is Instant Install?
Instant Install is
a self extracting archive that will automatically install fonts
into your Windows operating system. Instant Install was
created for FontFace by Digitope
utilizing FontZip technology. A shareware version of FontZip is
available for download at their site. (BACK

How
do I install fonts in Windows?
Windows users can simply
download the Instant Install option and just run the program.
If you prefer to download the PC ZIP version, you will need to expand
the archive (use WinZip
or similar) and save the .TTF file to a location that you'll be
able to find when you perform the next step.
- Click Start, point
to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fonts.
- (Windows XP users
will need to select "Appearances and Themes" and then
choose "Fonts" from the left column.)
- On the File menu,
click Install New Font.
- Click the drive, and
then click the folder that contains the fonts you want to add.
- Click the font you
want to add.

Is
there a limit to the number of fonts I can install?
For Windows users, the
limit varies, but is around 1000. If you need access to more fonts,
there are several great font management tools out there. (BACK

Instant
Install is not working!
If you are
running Windows 95 and you are getting the error message of "a
required DLL file MSVBUM50.DLL was not found" then you need
to download
this Visual Basic Runtime.
Additionally, fonts seem
to occasionally "disappear". While the fonts do not seem
to be installed, they are usually still in the Font Folder. Simply
follow the manual installation instructions (found above) and navigate
to your font directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\FONTS) and re-select
the "disappeared" fonts and install them. You may have
to repeat this process.
If you have a different
problem, I suggest you download the old fashioned version in the
.ZIP archives. (BACK

Why
won't my fonts stay installed in Windows?
When using Instant
Install, fonts seem to occasionally "disappear".
While the fonts do not seem to be installed, they are usually still
in the Font Folder. Simply follow the manual installation instructions
(found above) and navigate to your font directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\FONTS)
and re-select the "disappeared" fonts and install them.
You may have to repeat this process. If the problem persists, please
contact Eric LeVin at Digitope.

How
do I uninstall fonts?
In your Windows Control
Panel (accessible through the Start Menu typically) double-click
on the "Fonts" folder. (Windows XP users will need to
select "Appearances and Themes" and then choose "Fonts"
from the left column.) Opening up this folder will display a list
of all installed fonts. Simply select fonts you want to uninstall
and hit your delete key. (BACK

How
do I create my own fonts?
Good question - everyone wants their handwriting in a font, don't
they? It's not as easy as you might think to make a font but it
can be done! You'll need a font creation program (links
available here). Fontographer is the most well known program
and a great tutorial on how to use it can be found here.
Don't forget to show me your work when you're done! Your new font
could be the next Font of the Day! (BACK

I
have an idea for a font but need some help.
If you have an idea for a font, that's great! In the past, I have
helped several people turn their drawings into fonts. If you have
drawn a full alphabet on paper, send me a scan or picture of it
and I'll let you know if it's something I'd be willing to help you
digitize. I will do it for free if you will allow it to become a
"FontFace original" font. Additionally, for $25, I can
turn your signature, logo, or other predrawn graphic into a font
for easy use. Email for more
info. (BACK TO
TOP)
How
do you make the Instant Install archives?
Instant Install archives are made using FontZip technology
available from Digitope.
While a custom version was created specifically for FontFace, a
shareware trial is available on their website. (BACK
TO TOP)
I
need a certain font. Can you help?
I can't help you, so please don't ask. The number of requests
I receive for fonts is overwhelming and all such reqests will therefore
be ignored. I'm sorry.
If you need a specific
font, however, I would suggest using the Font Search tool located
on the top left of this page. It will search through the FontFace
free font archives and thousands of commercial fonts to find a match
for you. Additionally, a great utility called "WhatTheFont"
may help if you have a scan or picture of the font you need. (BACK
TO TOP)
Why
don't fonts show up right when I send an e-mail?
Quite simply, in order for someone to see a font in an email (or
most other documents, for that matter) they must have the font installed
on their machine as well. When the font is not installed, the email
software typically defaults to a standard font. If it is crucial
that the font be used to view the email, you may wish to attach
the font to the email and instruct the recipient on how to install
it. Additionally, you could type your email as a Word document and,
when saving, select the option to Embed TrueType Fonts. Then, attach
the document to the email. (BACK
TO TOP)
Why
don't the fonts have color when I use them?
If you were to look at the inner workings of a font, you'd see that
a font is little more than an advanced CONNECT-THE-DOT drawing of
letters. When your computer connects the dots to make each letter,
it fills it with color - typically black. Not every program will
allow you to change the color, though most will. Read your software's
documentation for instructions on how to change the properties of
a font.
Also, all fonts shown
on FontFace are "anti-aliased" which give them a smooth
look. Fonts will typically be a little crunchy looking on your screen
- they will print out smoothly, though, so don't worry. (BACK
TO TOP)
How
can I get my font on FontFace.com?
If you've created a font that you'd like to see featured as Font
of the Day, simply submit it by email so that I can look at it.
If your font is unique and of good quality, I will feature it here
and will notify you by email. If it needs work, I will offer suggestions
and constructive criticism on how you can improve it. (BACK
TO TOP)
How
can I get my font removed from FontFace.com?
If you are the creator of any font in the archives at FontFace and
you, for whatever reason, decide that you'd like your font removed
from the listings, simply send
an email and it will be done! (BACK
